Inside the Tasting Rooms The mission at Quivira is admirable: "to specialize in small-lot varietals specifically matched to the soil, strength of the sun and coastal influence; and to produce quality wines that are an honest reflection of our commitment to biodynamic agriculture and our dedication to artisan winemaking." Following through with this mission however requires complete loyalty to one's beliefs and commitment to actions that will carry them out. At Quivira, they do just that. Quivira uses 100% biodynamic farming methods. They have their own green house where they raise heirloom varietals of plants and vegetables. They have over 120 raised beds for crop growing to support local restaurants and markets. They have chickens to help with fertilization and as a side benefit, they produce eggs for the local farmers market. They raise bees for pollination and then of course there's Ruby - their awesome pig that helps keep the soil aerated around a small orchard of apple, pear and plum trees. They also make their own olive oil, honey and preserves from fruit trees on their vineyard including a 130 old black mission fig tree! As for their wines, they are being humble when they say that "we don't make wine, we grow wine" but, they are hard-and-fast believers in the thought that the potential of the fruit, and therefore good wine, is either present in the grape at the time of harvest or it isn't. And, their wines speak to this truth with the resulting effect being wines that are pure and vibrant, resonating purely on the palate. It is synergy in the making or in this case, tasting. They specialize in Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Rhone varietals such as Syrah, Granache and Mouvedre. A trip to Quivira Winery and Vineyards is a must! It is s a rare educational and sensory treat where the essence of their integrity and the health of the land is felt at every step….and even when you're standing still.
